Boston Concert Club (BCC) has worked in partnership with Lincolnshire Music Service (LMS) since 2012 to take our visiting musicians into local primary schools. We organise a programme of visits by the musicians where they give a performance to the children of between 45 minutes to an hour. They play and talk about their instruments and what it’s like to be a professional musician.
The schools have welcomed us warmly, with many headteachers acknowledging the importance to their pupils of experiencing live performances, often for the first time. The children themselves are fascinated by the sights and sounds they experience from our musicians.
These visits support the requirements of the National Music Plan for Education by enhancing and supplementing the music already offered within schools, by providing live music experiences to inspire and engage. The schools pay a small, heavily subsidised fee to receive a visit from one of the groups visiting the club, whereas BCC is supported financially by LMS, via an Arts Council grant, to cover the costs of paying the musicians.
During the last five years we have taken our musicians into 32 different primary schools, large and small, in Boston and outside of the town. Children from 4 to 11 years of age, spanning Key Stages 1 and 2, have attended these performances. There have also been workshop opportunities for the Boston Wind Band and GCSE and “A” Level music students at Haven High Academy with particular groups.
